The China Man's Hut - Full Day walk and overnight stay in the hut - 5/6 hours return walking - 12km return - 4000ft above sea level  - Fitness level required - average to good

A gradual climb to 4000ft the Slate Range takes in panoramic views of Southland and Otago. Subalpine grassland and rocky schist outcrops reveal the Eyre and Hector Mountains. A short descent into wild deer country reveals the China Man's Hut. Spend the next few hours relaxing or exploring the water race before lighting a fire and preparing your dinner. As night falls, light the candles, enjoy a drink and watch the sunset. Read about the local history including the story of the ghost and take a moment to remember the hardened pioneers of days gone by. Snuggle into your sleeping bag and become mesmerised by the warm glow of the fireplace before dreaming of gold in the hills.

The sod hut sleeps a maximum of 4 people on bunk beds. A camping gas cooker, cooking utensils and a stack of fire wood are available for use in the hut. You must provide all of your own food, beverage and sleeping bag. Drinking water may be taken from a small creek located on the race approximately 50 metres north from the hut.
